Christmas Ginger Bread Men

Christmas is fast approaching and I couldn’t wait to get in the kitchen.

To me, Christmas is such a special time of year to be enjoyed with both family and friends and baking is such a huge part of the whole season in my eyes! You can create some beautiful treats to be enjoyed by all, as well as the traditional Christmas pud! Although the waist line will definitely not thank you for it come the New Year, but hey, who cares! That’s why we make New Years resolutions. And I for one know mine will be joining the gym so I really don’t feel all that bad about indulging this Christmas!

“He’s cute, he’s sweet and he doesn’t get upset when you bite his head off!”

This year is the return of the gingerbread men and no man is complete without his house! I have seen some gorgeous designs online and I feel really inspired to come up with a really fun design for mine too! Although I don’t think either will be around for long. My boyfriend will be there before they even have chance to come out of the oven!

Getting others involved in baking is all part of the fun and my boyfriend and I are big kids at heart! Flour fights in the kitchen, eating the M&M’s before they make it onto the gingerbread men themselves! Yes, Christmas is the only time you can act like a big kid and get away with it, so this weekend we took full advantage of that statement!

We created a range of different gingerbread men and had so much fun in the process! We have the recipe down to a tee now, since its something we like to make on a regular basis! – There is nothing better than a good cup of coffee and a ginger biscuit at any time of the year!

And for me, Christmas Eve will involve being back in the kitchen for round 2 of the gingerbread men and a beautiful winter wonderland house to go with them! I have found a great template online for the house and can’t wait to get stuck in! I haven’t made one before so its something new and exciting for me to try, and if it’s a success, I’m sure there will be plenty more where that came from and be a hit at my bakery! Now all I need to do is work out what will be the best way to assemble all the parts as I’m no construction worker …

If you want to try making these delicious gingerbread men, check out the recipe below. They are so easy to make and a lot of fun, a really nice festive treat to be enjoyed by both young and old. So roll up those sleeves and get baking!

100g of butter or margarine
255g of self-raising flour
5ml/1tsp baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)
5ml/1tsp of ground ginger (although I tend to add a little extra for a strong ginger taste!)
100g caster sugar or brown sugar works really well
45ml / 3tbsp golden syrup – warmed (or 4 tbsp if mix is dry)

1. Rub the butter into the flour, add the bicarbonate of soda and ginger.

2. Stir in the sugar, then blend in the syrup and mix to stiff dough.

3. Roll out the soft dough on a hard surface to a desired thickness. Then use a cutter to make the shape. You can even get creative and make your own gingerbread shapes!

Then its off to the oven to bake at 190 centigrade. We like our gingerbread men more on the softer side so 10-15 minutes is amble of time, but if you would prefer yours with more of a crunch I would recommend an extra 5 or 10 minutes baking time!
